The State Bar of New Mexico does not currently offer a lawyer referral service or reduced fees. However, its website has an online searchable directory of attorneys who are members of the Bar. The directory can be searched by type of law, county, or language spoken, and will show a list of attorneys who meet the search criteria. Clients can then contact those attorneys directly. The Modest Means Helpline is a civil legal telephone helpline and pro bono referral service of the New Mexico State Bar Foundation for state residents of modest means, and can assist with matters such as domestic violence, divorce, child custody, and more (income restrictions apply). See our NM Legal Assistance page for more information on the Modest Means Helpline.
Lawyer Referral Services
If you are a victim of abuse, you may want to ask the Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service whether or not they screen for lawyers who are experienced in handling domestic violence cases. For a suggested list of questions to ask regarding the lawyer’s fees and experience when interviewing an attorney, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.
