Places that Help: Puerto Rico

Sheriff Departments

Updated:

Before a protection order can take effect, it must be served upon the abuser. In most states, protection orders are served by the sheriff department. However, usually in Puerto Rico the order of protection will be served by either the police department or the court’s bailiff. You can contact the clerk of the court in the court that issued your order to find out the procedure for service if you are unsure. For a list of Puerto Rico courts, check the PR Courthouse Locations page on our site. If your municipality has a domestic violence intervention program, it is possible they will be the ones to serve the protection order to the abuser. Here you will find a list of the existing domestic violence intervention programs in Puerto Rico.
